Cantate BWV 106 - Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit

About this work

Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit BWV 106, commonly called the Actus tragicus, is marked by its gentle scoring for two recorders, two violas da gamba and continuo. The sonatina places the whole work in subdued light.

Four large sections join choruses, solos and dialogues without the regular recitative-and-aria sequence of later cantatas. The soprano chorale is notably superimposed on lower voices, and the final section leads to an Amen fugue.

Treat the score as one continuous journey. Recorders and viols must breathe with the singers, while changes of text alter the colour without breaking the pulse. In layered passages, make the chorale and solo replies clearly distinct.
