About this work
Was willst du dich betrüben BWV 107 retains all seven hymn stanzas. The first becomes a chorale fantasia in which the soprano carries the melody above animated writing for flutes, oboes d’amore, strings and lower voices.
After a bass recitative, four arias treat the middle stanzas in turn: bass, tenor, soprano and tenor. Each renews the instrumental setting and vocal gesture before a harmonised chorale gathers the final stanza.
Learn the shared tune before working on its transformations. In each aria, identify the principal instrumental partner and coordinate breaths. The last chorale should not sound appended; retain the same sense of phrase found in the solo stanzas.
