Cantate BWV 113 - Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut

About this work

Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut BWV 113 presents the hymn in several forms. The opening fantasia gives its melody to the soprano; the following alto aria retains it almost bare within a more mobile accompaniment.

A bass recitative and aria lead to a tenor recitative and aria. The seventh movement combines a soprano recitative with alto chorale interventions before the final four-part harmonisation.

Locate every return of the hymn and alter its prominence without changing its identity. The alto line must remain clearly legible in the second movement. In the later dialogue, distinguish free recitative speech from the chorale’s stability.
