Christum wir sollen loben schon BWV 121 opens with a deliberately archaic chorale fantasia. The old melody moves in long notes in the soprano while the other voices build dense polyphony doubled by instruments.
A tenor aria with oboe d’amore and strings abruptly changes the language. An alto recitative leads to the bass aria, also with oboe d’amore, and a soprano recitative prepares the final chorale.
In the first chorus, favour independent lines and sober diction. The tenor needs momentum without losing the words. In the bass aria, listen for exchanges with the oboe; the chorale returns to the hymn’s simplicity.
