Liebster Immanuel, Herzog der Frommen BWV 123 surrounds its Epiphany hymn with a chorale fantasia in a grave dance motion. The soprano carries the tune while oboes d’amore, strings and lower voices weave supple lines.
An alto recitative leads to the tenor aria with two oboes d’amore. The bass then receives a recitative and an aria with flute and strings; the final chorale restates the last stanza in an expanded harmonisation.
Keep the first chorus moving regularly without making it rigid. The tenor should sing between rather than above the two oboes. In the bass aria, allow flute figures to breathe before the chorale’s collective return.
