Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder BWV 135 reverses the usual disposition: in the opening fantasia, the hymn tune is entrusted to the choral bass, reinforced by low instruments.

A tenor recitative leads to an aria with two oboes. After an alto recitative, the bass receives an aria with strings, and the final chorale returns the hymn in four-part harmony.

Make the cantus firmus audible from below without crushing upper voices. The tenor should articulate with the oboes and keep the line moving. In the bass aria, strings sustain direction before the chorale’s recovered simplicity.
