Cantate BWV 138 - Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz ?

About this work

Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz BWV 138 combines a chorale stanza with anxious solo interventions from its opening. Collective hymn and individual speech are therefore not separated into sealed movements.

A bass recitative and bass aria gradually shift the centre of gravity. A new confrontation between chorus and recitative precedes the soprano aria; after a final recitative, the closing chorale stabilises the work.

Distinguish chorale from recitative by colour and articulation without interrupting their dialogue. The bass must lead the move from doubt towards assurance. Lighten the texture in the soprano aria before the collective conclusion.
