About this work
Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott BWV 139 builds its chorale fantasia over a highly mobile instrumental line. The soprano carries the hymn while oboes d’amore, strings and lower voices sustain momentum.
The tenor then sings with obbligato violin. An alto recitative leads to an assertive bass aria, and the soprano recitative prepares the final four-part chorale.
Keep the cantus firmus calm without slowing the other lines. Tenor and violin must share articulation. The bass can rely on instrumental rhythm, and the soprano recitative should return naturally to the chorale.
