About this work
Süßer Trost, mein Jesus kömmt was composed for the third day of Christmas in 1725. It begins without a chorus, in an intimate soprano aria where flute floats above strings whose colour is softened by an oboe d’amore doubling the first violin.
Two recitatives frame a more spare alto aria, In Jesu Demut kann ich Trost, with much of the instrumental writing in unison. The chorale Heut schleußt er wieder auf die Tür finally gathers the four voices in a brief conclusion without enlarging the work’s inward scale.
In the opening aria, allow flute and soprano to breathe without suspending the pulse. The alto aria requires exact agreement of articulation between voice and instrumental line. Prepare the chorale as the natural outcome of the tenor recitative rather than an appended number.
