Cantate BWV 152 - Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn

About this work

Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn belongs to Bach’s Weimar cantatas and was first performed on 30 December 1714. It dispenses with chorus and violins in favour of an unusual chamber ensemble: recorder, oboe, viola d’amore, viola da gamba and continuo surround only soprano and bass.

The sinfonia immediately presents these distinct timbres. The bass, representing Christ, sings and recites around the image of the stone; the soprano, as the Soul, answers with recorder and viola d’amore. The closing duet unites both characters while the instruments play in unison.

This score demands listening more than power. Align the early instruments’ attacks precisely while preserving each colour. In the recitatives, the bass should retain a speaking authority; the final duet will move freely when both voices share consonants without weighting the continuo.
