Cantate BWV 157 - Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn
About this work
Cantata BWV 157 opens with the words “Ich lasse dich nicht” in a dialogue that refuses grandiloquence. The solo voices hold to a repeated promise, supported by instruments whose motifs seem to retain the phrase. Its intensity comes from this measured insistence and from the way the text circulates between the lines.
Rehearse each vocal entrance with its accompanying instrument before assembling the whole group. Every return of the motif should preserve its rhythmic identity while responding to the current word. Consonants provide firmness but must never interrupt the movement of the vowels. A steady tempo gives the imitations time to become audible.
In the arias, balance ornament and declamation: a run must lead somewhere rather than suspend the meaning. Instrumentalists can define points of support without covering the voices, especially in neighbouring registers. The final chorale then calls for shared simplicity. After the more mobile exchanges, its unity sounds strong only when everyone hears the full length of the phrases.
