About this work
Sehet, wir gehn hinauf gen Jerusalem was written for the Sunday before Lent, probably in 1729. It opens without a tutti: the bass as Jesus announces the journey to Jerusalem while the alto, representing the Soul, answers in recitative and arioso over strings.
The second movement superimposes the alto aria Ich folge dir nach and a stanza of O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden sung by the soprano. After a tenor recitative, the bass aria Es ist vollbracht suspends time around a solo oboe before the final chorale.
The first movement requires a clear distinction between Christ’s words and the Soul’s responses without breaking their dialogue. In the aria with chorale, place the soprano tune first and build the alto line around it. The bass aria benefits from restraint until its internal changes of motion.
