About this work
This work was long published as a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach under the number BWV 160. It is now attributed to Georg Philipp Telemann and catalogued as TWV 1:877. The historical file title remains useful for finding it, but Telemann is the composer to retain.
The Easter cantata has five movements for tenor alone: three arias separated by two recitatives. Violin, bassoon and continuo form a very small ensemble. The first aria develops its motif around Ich weiß, daß mein Erlöser lebt; the livelier last aria turns that certainty into readiness before death.
The tenor should distinguish the three arias without overpowering the ensemble: poised declaration, more mobile praise, then resolution. Establish the violin motif, continuo bass and bassoon articulation before placing the words. Keep both recitatives close to speech and favour chamber balance over projection.
