Cantate BWV 162 - Ach! ich sehe, jetzt, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe
About this work
Ach! ich sehe, itzt, da ich zur Hochzeit gehe is a Weimar cantata for the twentieth Sunday after Trinity, revived in Leipzig in 1723. It recasts the parable of the wedding feast as a sequence without opening chorus: the bass first contemplates celebration and judgement together.
All four soloists appear before joining forces. The tenor recites, the soprano sings Jesu, Brunnquell aller Gnaden in a movement whose continuo is the only fully surviving accompaniment, then the alto recites. An alto-tenor duet finally expresses joy before the chorale.
Account for the incomplete transmission of the third movement: any added instrumental reconstruction should be identified as such. The opening aria needs an articulate bass over the string motion. In the duet, unify the coloratura without erasing the exchange between both voices.
