About this work
Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet was composed in Leipzig in 1725 to a text Salomon Franck had written ten years earlier. Without an opening chorus, the tenor aria directly challenges those who call themselves Christians: voice and strings give the address a firmness not yet softened into charity.
The bass recitative leads to the alto aria Nur durch Lieb und durch Erbarmen with two flutes. After a tenor recitative accompanied by strings, those flutes return in the soprano-bass duet, reinforced in unison by oboes and violins, before the chorale.
In the alto aria, let both flutes and the voice breathe together without losing the pulse. The duet requires precise balance between vocal lines and its many instrumental doublings. The final chorale should extend that clarity through directed voices rather than a single block of sound.
