About this work
Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust is a solo alto cantata first performed on 28 July 1726. Its opening aria unfolds a spacious peace with oboe d’amore and strings, but the following recitative introduces the dissonance of the ‘world, house of sin’: the promised rest is never merely decorative sweetness.
At the centre, Wie jammern mich doch die verkehrten Herzen sets voice and obbligato organ against strings in unison, without an independent continuo bass. An accompanied recitative then prepares Mir ekelt mehr zu leben, where concertante organ, strings and oboe d’amore give the rejection of the world an almost physical energy.
The alto needs intelligible diction across a long, exposed range. In the third movement, do not fill its spaces: the texture draws strength from the absence of a normal bass line. Tune organ and strings precisely, then reserve a fuller colour for the final aria.
