Gott, wie dein Name, so ist auch dein Ruhm is a New Year cantata on a libretto by Picander. Its first performance is usually placed in 1729, although a later date around 1736–1737 remains possible. The opening chorus sets Psalm 48 with three trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings and tightly worked fugal writing.

After that public proclamation, the tenor aria reduces the forces to strings. The soprano aria Jesus soll mein erstes Wort, accompanied by solo violin, reworks music from the secular cantata BWV 205. The bass recitative brings back the oboes before the final chorale is again framed by trumpets and timpani.

Build the first chorus from its vocal counterpoint, then add the brass brilliance without masking entries. In the soprano aria, violin and voice should form one gesture rather than compete in virtuosity. The closing chorale benefits from retaining the opening pulse despite its ceremonial character.
