Cantate BWV 175 - Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen

About this work

Er rufet seinen Schafen mit Namen was first performed on 22 May 1725 for the third day of Pentecost, setting a text by Christiane Mariane von Ziegler. The tenor first delivers the verse from St John in a recitative surrounded by three recorders, giving the shepherd’s call an immediately recognisable colour.

Those recorders then accompany the alto aria Komm, leite mich. After a tenor recitative, piccolo cello becomes the agile partner in Es dünket mich, ich seh dich kommen, reworked from BWV 173a. A dialogued recitative leads to the bass aria with two trumpets and then the chorale.

The three recorders should sound like one breath without losing their individual lines. In the tenor aria, establish piccolo cello and continuo before aligning coloratura and phrase direction. The bass aria needs a firm pulse and present but not dominant trumpets: its text about listening must remain foremost.
