Cantate BWV 178 - Wo Gott, der Herr, nicht bei uns hält

About this work

Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält belongs to Bach’s 1724 chorale-cantata cycle. The hymn by Justus Jonas, itself based on Psalm 124, remains constantly present: the opening chorus places its tune in the soprano, and several recitatives alternate free verse with fragments of chorale.

The bass aria Gleichwie die wilden Meereswellen depicts wild waves through unison violins and an insistent continuo. A tenor chorale with two oboes d’amore then refocuses the ear. Later, all four voices intervene within a recitative before the tenor aria Schweig, schweig turns silence into a dramatic element.

In the mixed movements, distinguish recitative speech from chorale metre without breaking continuity. The bass aria should move as one swell rather than a series of accents. In Schweig, observe every silence exactly and sustain tension through to the final chorale.
