Cantate BWV 179 - Siehe zu, dass deine Gottesfurcht

About this work

Siehe zu, daß deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei was first performed in 1723 for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity. The opening chorus begins with almost motet-like austerity: voices build a fugue above continuo before strings progressively reinforce the argument against hypocrisy.

After a tenor recitative, Falscher Heuchler Ebenbild opposes an incisive vocal line to oboes and strings. The bass recitative turns the argument inward. In Liebster Gott, erbarme dich, the soprano is surrounded by two oboes da caccia whose dark colour prepares the chorale Ich armer Mensch.

Build the first chorus through successive entries, keeping the counterpoint intelligible as instruments join. The tenor aria needs biting articulation without haste. In the soprano aria, sustain the long phrases and tune the two low oboes carefully before the chorale.
