About this work
Himmelskönig, sei willkommen was first performed in Weimar on 25 March 1714, Palm Sunday and the Feast of the Annunciation. It opened Bach’s new monthly cantata schedule. A sonata for recorder, concertante violin, two violas and continuo establishes a chamber ensemble before the welcoming chorus.
The bass recitative quotes Psalm 40. Three arias follow without repeating the same colour: bass with strings, alto with solo recorder, then tenor supported by continuo. The chorale Jesu, deine Passion becomes a polyphonic movement before So lasset uns gehen turns the journey to Jerusalem into a contrapuntal procession.
The sonata should establish shared breathing between violin and recorder without rushing its grave opening. In the three arias, make the progressive thinning of the ensemble audible. The last chorus grows by accumulation: keep every entry clear and let energy come from the counterpoint.
