About this work
Erwünschtes Freudenlicht was first performed for the third day of Pentecost in 1724. Apart from the chorale, Bach adapted a now-lost secular cantata, BWV 184a. The tenor recitative and soprano-alto duet retain the elegance of court music, coloured by two transverse flutes.
A second tenor recitative leads to Glück und Segen sind bereit, where solo violin accompanies a highly dance-like vocal line. Unusually, the chorale Herr, ich hoff je precedes the concluding chorus Guter Hirte, Trost der Deinen. Bach later reworked part of this final movement for the secular cantata BWV 213.
Embrace the duet and aria’s choreographic lightness without making them superficial. Both flutes should support the voices through shared articulation. After the sober chorale, the last chorus should reopen the space; keep entries precise and motion supple.
