Cantate BWV 185 - Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe

About this work

Barmherziges Herze der ewigen Liebe was first performed in Weimar in 1715 to a text by Salomon Franck and later revived in Leipzig. It begins with a soprano-tenor duet: above their imitation, the oboe states the tune Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, which will only be sung at the end.

The alto recitative with strings denounces stony hearts, then Sei bemüht develops a more mobile line with oboe and strings. After the bass recitative, Das ist der Christen Kunst narrows the texture around the low voice and continuo before the explicit chorale.

In the opening duet, place the instrumental chorale tune without stiffening both voices. The alto aria needs continuous motion and clearly ranked imitations. The bass should retain very direct diction in the next aria, then allow the chorale to gather colours heard since the opening.
