About this work
Ärgre dich, o Seele, nicht was first performed in Leipzig on 11 July 1723. Bach expanded an earlier Weimar Advent cantata, BWV 186a: he added four recitatives, replaced the closing chorale and divided eleven movements into two parts intended to frame the sermon.
Part One moves from the opening chorus through bass and tenor arias to the chorale Ob sichs anließ. After the sermon, a bass recitative with strings reopens the work. The soprano aria Die Armen will der Herr umarmen and soprano-alto duet Laß, Seele, kein Leiden again reuse Weimar music before the second chorale.
Think of the score as two connected arcs, not eleven equal numbers. The opening chorus should preserve its unease without losing textual clarity. In the duet, rank voices, oboes and strings carefully; both chorales need to close their respective parts while retaining one overall pulse.
