About this work
Es wartet alles auf dich was first performed on 4 August 1726. Its expansive opening chorus sets two verses of Psalm 104: oboes, strings and voices circulate a motif of waiting before the words about God’s open hand unfold a more generous section. Bach later reused several movements in the Mass BWV 235.
The bass recitative leads to the alto aria Du Herr, du krönst allein das Jahr, closing Part One. Part Two opens with Christ’s words, Darum sollt ihr nicht sorgen, entrusted to bass with violins. A soprano aria with solo oboe, an accompanied recitative and the chorale complete the journey.
In the chorus, distinguish the text’s two ideas without interrupting the motion. The alto aria needs one shared line among voice, oboe and strings. Give the bass in Part Two calm authority; in the soprano aria, let the oboe answer rather than double the voice.
