About this work
Ihr Tore zu Zion was first performed on 25 August 1727 for the installation of Leipzig’s town council. The work shares several numbers with the secular cantata BWV 193a, but its transmission is highly incomplete: only soprano, alto, oboe and string parts survive, while the sixth movement is lost.
The opening chorus retains a festive character despite those gaps. Two recitatives and two arias then entrust most of the text to soprano and alto. The cantata closes by repeating the first chorus to the words Ihr Pforten zu Zion; the edition completes missing lines to make this fragmentary work performable.
Before rehearsal, identify reconstructed parts and preserve that distinction in the working material. In the choruses, build the counterpoint from the surviving voices rather than seeking massed sound first. The arias need clear diction and precise dialogue with the oboe; the final reprise should recover the opening tempo and articulation.
