About this work
Der Herr denket an uns is an early wedding cantata, probably composed around 1708. It may have accompanied the marriage of pastor Johann Lorenz Stauber and Regina Wedemann on 5 June 1708, although that occasion is not certain. Its text draws on verses 12 to 15 of Psalm 115.
A sinfonia for strings and continuo opens the five movements. The first chorus develops Der Herr denket an uns in tightly worked counterpoint; a soprano aria with unison violins and a tenor-bass duet lead to the chorus Ihr seid die Gesegneten. No recitative interrupts this continuity.
In the sinfonia, allow the motif to circulate among the strings while keeping a stable bass line. The first chorus needs precise entries and light diction. In the aria and duet, establish the instrumental lines and tune the vocal intervals first; the final chorus should grow without losing the work’s intimate scale.
