About this work
Gott ist unsre Zuversicht is a wedding cantata composed around 1736–1737. Its ten movements are divided around the ceremony. The opening chorus brings together three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, strings and continuo in an expansive proclamation before the solo voices develop a more personal argument.
The first part includes an alto aria with oboe d’amore and a bass recitative accompanied by strings, then closes with a chorale. After the wedding, the bass aria O du angenehmes Paar sets oboe, obbligato bassoon and strings in dialogue. The soprano aria with solo violin and two oboes d’amore reworks music from the lost cantata BWV 197a.
In the opening chorus, establish the vocal counterpoint before adding the brilliance of the trumpets. The alto aria needs a homogeneous colour from oboe d’amore and strings; the bass aria depends on clear bassoon and continuo lines. In the soprano aria, let the violin guide the breaths without covering the words.
