The word ‘variant’ does not mean that this is a redundant copy of Fugue BWV 574. This more compact document transmits another state of the work on the theme associated with Legrenzi. The subject and its entries remain the guiding thread, but their sequence and the extent of the form must be read within this particular version.

The voices quickly build an imitative texture before episodes reorganise fragments of the theme and lead towards cadences. Relative brevity does not remove the need to hear each plane. The pedal part provides depth in the bass while remaining articulated with the manual voices.
