About this work
A short semiquaver motif launches Invention No. 1 in C major. It immediately passes from one hand to the other, turns, fragments and supplies almost the entire piece. Clarity depends less on speed than on making these transformations audible within two equal voices.
Locate every entry of the motif and the bass supporting its sequences. When the hands play related shapes, they do not necessarily have the same function: one directs the phrase while the other prepares the next imitation. Cadences provide brief breaths without interrupting the pulse.
Practise in motif-sized segments, using stable fingering and the same articulation when material changes hands. Then bring out each voice in turn without altering tempo. In sequences, think towards the harmonic destination rather than through a succession of bars; the final groups will gain direction.
