Invention No. 2 in C minor develops a supple motif that continually passes from one voice to the other. Its stepwise line and small chromatic turns create a more unsettled character than the first invention without interrupting the continuity of motion.
Sequences move the harmony rapidly. Locate motif entries, then the bass that confirms or unsettles each key. One voice may end its phrase while the other has already begun the next; cadences are therefore points of articulation rather than complete stops.
Practise both hands with the same kind of legato and fingering that releases motif endings. Mentally stress the first note of each entry without striking it. When the texture tightens, reduce the dynamics rather than accelerating so as to preserve the pulse and independence of both voices.
