Invention n°05 BWV 776

About this work

Invention No. 5 in E-flat major unfolds long stepwise lines that seem to continue beyond each bar. The motif passes between the hands, yet its interest also lies in the counter-lines: neither voice should disappear when the other gathers momentum.

Sequences move the harmony by stages and lead towards carefully prepared cadences. Follow the bass, then notice how the upper voice resumes or completes its shape. Dynamics can clarify this circulation without introducing contrasts foreign to the counterpoint.

Practise each line while singing its destinations and choose fingerings that avoid thumb accents. Then combine the hands quietly, bringing out a different imitation on every pass. Retain a regular pulse through the runs and allow only the cadences to broaden the breathing slightly.
