Invention n°09 BWV 780

About this work

Invention No. 9 in F minor stands apart through a more restrained song and intervals that create expressive friction. The two voices nevertheless continue their dialogue: each takes up the motif, extends it or prepares the other’s resolution.

Ornaments and dissonances need a clearly heard bass. Locate suspensions, their resolutions and cadences opening a new phrase. The pulse must remain internal beneath the legato; excessive slowness would fragment the counterpoint rather than deepen it.

Practise intervals while naming the resolving note, then play each voice with its own breath. Combine them quietly and without pedal before adding very short resonance. Bring out the motif through direction and note duration rather than an accent; ornaments need to extend the song.
