Invention n°11 BWV 782

About this work

The eleventh Invention, in G minor, presents an ornamented motif whose flexibility contrasts with the rigour of imitation. Each voice seems to take up the same breath, yet entries overlap and create a continuity that must not be interrupted whenever the material changes hands.

Follow the bass to understand sequences and harmonic tensions. Cadences provide breaths while ornaments often extend the line beyond the point of support. Legato depends on fingering and actual note duration more than on pedal.

Sing the motif with its ornaments before playing it, then seek identical fingering in comparable passages. Practise one voice connected and the other lighter, then reverse them. With both hands, keep the pulse steady and shape dynamics around entries so that the dialogue remains expressive without becoming heavy.
