A quick motive crosses this Invention by passing from one hand to the other. This is not a melody with accompaniment, but a conversation between two voices, each of which must retain its direction. If one hand becomes the permanent soloist and the other mere support, the counterpoint immediately loses its vitality.
Practise each voice alone while hearing the other internally. Then combine them at a pace that leaves entrances, imitations, and cadences audible. Evenness does not mean accenting every note alike: group the semiquavers according to the phrase and lighten motive endings. Thumb passages should not create rhythmic bumps.
The piece is short, which makes it an excellent articulation test. Try a connected but unglued touch, then listen for two distinct lines. Increase the tempo only when passing notes keep their place and cadences can still breathe. The MIDI can help locate the structure, but the real work begins when each hand knows how to listen to the other.
