The sixteenth fugue from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 861, brings together four voices in G minor. A short subject marked by distinctive intervals and rhythm rapidly crosses every register.

Bach draws the entries closer and animates the inner voices with continuous figures. Episodes shift the harmony, but each return of the subject restores direction through to the final cadence.
