About this work
The Pastorale in F major, BWV 590, evokes not so much a particular landscape as a family of gestures: a lilting compound metre, sustained notes like a drone bass, and a supple melody above. The complete work has four contrasting sections. The first, the most immediately pastoral, establishes a broad breath; those that follow gradually move the writing towards more animated and contrapuntal textures.
At the organ, choose a registration that allows the upper line to speak without thickening the drone. Legato comes from the transfer between voices and the actual duration of each note, not from a general blur. Feel the main beats of the compound metre and let the ornaments fall within them. The pedal should support the harmonic ground calmly, without becoming the principal character.
The document available here covers only two pages: treat it as a practice excerpt, not as the complete four-section work. Check the breaths at cadences and choose a speed that allows the low notes to resonate. On a generous instrument, fewer stops are often sufficient; the acoustic is already doing part of the work, so there is no need to give it the baton as well.
