Prélude en La mineur BWV 569

About this work

The Prelude in A minor uses closely woven counterpoint rather than outward virtuoso display. Voices answer, overlap and extend short motifs through several registers. Tension comes from suspensions and harmonic motion as much as from the regular activity of the quavers.

The bass and pedal part direct sequences towards their cadences. When one voice sustains a long note, the others continue moving, so the exact length of that note becomes essential to balance. Giving every voice identical articulation would make the fabric opaque; each line needs to retain its own phrasing.

Practise the manual voices in pairs while singing the bass, then add the pedals quietly. Locate suspensions and their resolutions before choosing registration. Maintain a steady pulse in sequences and allow only the cadences to open the breathing without breaking continuity.
