About this work
The Prelude in G major alternates rapid runs, arpeggios, chords and exchanges between registers. This variety creates an improvisatory appearance, yet the writing remains organised by harmonic direction. Changes of texture need to follow one another without allowing the pulse to disappear with every new figure.
The pedal part does more than hold the foundations: it extends certain lines, answers the manuals and prepares cadences. Sequences increase tension before points of arrival. Following the bass clarifies these journeys and prevents a reading reduced to the right hand’s passagework.
Isolate each kind of gesture, then connect them at a common tempo. Practise runs in groups directed towards their arrival and check coordination with the pedals before increasing speed. A clear registration that can support chords without thickening arpeggios will preserve the relief of the form.
