About this work
The Prelude in C major combines assertive chords with more mobile lines circulating between manuals and pedals. The broad sonority suggested by the full-organ indication does not remove the need to articulate inner voices. Cadences and returning chords give the page its monumental architecture.
The Fugue uses a more compact scale around a flowing subject. Its entries gradually build the texture while episodes move fragments and prepare new combinations. The pedal part provides a foundation without interrupting continuity of pulse or covering the answers in the manual voices.
Practise the Prelude at a moderate volume so that the lines connecting the chords remain audible. In the Fugue, mark entries and play the manual voices alone before adding the pedals. Finally set the registration so that fullness remains transparent and every cadence retains its direction.
