The Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 549, makes it clear from the outset that the pedalboard will not remain in the background. The prelude opens with a pedal solo, taken up and answered by the manuals. The fugue then tightens the argument around a short subject whose successive entries must remain recognisable even as the texture fills out.
Practise the opening solo as a phrase, with direction and breathing, not as a demonstration for the feet. Regular articulation helps preserve the motif’s profile. When the hands join the pedalboard, make sure the bass remains audible without dominating: it is a partner in the counterpoint, not a foundation poured in concrete.
In the fugue, isolate every entry of the subject and name the voice carrying it. Then play the other lines more softly, but with complete articulation. This detour prevents the upper part from being brought forward automatically. The result should move with urgency while keeping the order of its construction audible.
