About this work
The Prelude in F minor unfolds a dense texture in which chromatic writing, suspensions and bass lines maintain continuous tension. The voices do not all move at the same rate: some sustain or resolve while others continue their figures. Exact note lengths therefore become a genuine expressive element.
The Fugue organises that tension around a subject whose successive entries cross the registers. Episodes use fragments, move the harmony through sequences and prepare cadences. The pedal part participates in the counterpoint; an overly heavy bass would make combinations less clear when the texture becomes denser.
First locate dissonances and their resolutions in the Prelude, then practise every voice quietly. For the Fugue, mark the subject and its returns before adding the pedals. A dark registration can be appropriate provided that enough clarity remains for articulation, cadences and inner lines.
