About this work
The Prelude in D major moves through several textures: pedal passagework, replies from the manuals, chords and more contrapuntal sections form an extended trajectory. Each section has its own gesture, yet all need to share a pulse and harmonic direction if they are not to become a mere juxtaposition of brilliant episodes.
The Fugue establishes a lively subject whose entries travel through the registers before being relayed by highly mobile episodes. Density increases without abolishing the independence of the voices. The pedals support returns and cadences; their articulation needs to remain compatible with the manuals in order to preserve rhythmic unity.
Isolate pedal runs and changes of texture in the Prelude, then connect them to a reference tempo. In the Fugue, practise the subject in every voice and reduce episodes to their pulse. Set registrations after this analysis so that contrasts illuminate the form without concealing the counterpoint.
