About this work
The Prelude and Fugue BWV 544 belongs to Bach’s Leipzig years and speaks with unusual gravity, even for a work in B minor. The prelude contrasts a broad orchestral ritornello with more intimate episodes. Its dotted rhythms, descending lines and dissonances suggest a march that moves forward while looking over its shoulder.
The fugue begins with an angular subject punctuated by rests, then establishes a more continuous motion. This contrast is essential: the subject must remain recognisable as it passes between voices without becoming a hammered slogan. The pedal part enters not to add weight, but to broaden the architecture gradually. Keep something in reserve before it arrives.
At the organ, establish the phrasing before seeking a spectacular registration. Practise the dotted rhythms against a steady beat and compare the articulation between voices. In the fugue, isolate the subject, countersubject and sequences; you will then know which line to follow when every finger is occupied. Majesty comes from proportion, not from pulling out stops like Christmas decorations.
