Prélude et Fugue en Sol majeur BWV 541

About this work

The Prelude and Fugue BWV 541 shows Bach’s organ writing in a brilliant light. The prelude launches rapid runs and assertive chords with concerto-like energy; the pedal is more than a foundation, taking part in the momentum and carrying some of the argument itself. The fugue shifts the perspective: its subject must remain recognisable within increasingly animated polyphony.

Begin the prelude without an over-heavy registration. Clean attacks and coherent articulation convey virtuosity better than piling up stops. Prepare pedal shifts before seeking speed and listen to the end of every note: randomly shortened values break the motion, while excessive legato clouds the harmony. Group manual passages into cells rather than fingering them as isolated notes.

In the fugue, mark every subject entry, including those in the bass. Then practise two voices at a time before restoring the pedal with the same articulation. The aim is not to mark each entry with a change of volume, but to leave enough space around it for the listener to find it. The final progression can then grow without losing its framework.
