Prélude et Fugue en Sol majeur BWV 550

About this work

The prelude moves forward almost without taking breath. Its short figures pass between keyboards, lean on the pedal, and create a feeling of continuous momentum. The aim is not simply to play as fast as possible: each motive must keep its contour, and every harmonic arrival should remain distinct within the regular flow.

Practise the manuals first with a shared articulation, then add the pedal as a genuine voice. A heavy bass checks the phrase; an imprecise one removes its foundation. Changes of manual or registration can clarify the planes, but rhythmic coherence comes first. One stable colour is more useful than a succession of effects with no structural purpose.

The fugue is more compact. Its subject must be recognisable at every entrance without pushing the other voices into the background. Hear internally the part that takes over, control note endings, and direct the episodes towards their cadences. The connection with the prelude then comes from the same energy, now tightened into contrapuntal writing.
