About this work
The Prelude in G minor alternates rapid runs, chords and bass motion within a discourse that is free yet strongly directed. Figures change register and density without losing their orientation towards cadences. Breaths between gestures matter as much as continuity within the runs.
The Fugue then gives the motion a more regular framework. The subject enters in several voices before episodes fragment its rhythm and move the harmony. The pedal part strengthens the progression in the bass while remaining an articulated voice; it should not turn every entry into a heavy accent.
Practise the gestures of the Prelude separately, then connect them through a common pulse. In the Fugue, play manual voices in pairs and add the pedals once entries are secure. Choose a registration that distinguishes lines and reserves the fullest sound for genuine points of arrival.
