About this work
The Prelude, Toccata and Fugue in E major, BWV 566, unfolds in 5 contrasting sections. Free gestures, fugal episodes, and pedal passages draw on the North German praeludium. The challenge is not to place these characters side by side, but to suggest an improvisation that gains definition, renews its impulse, and eventually commands its space.
In the free sections, organise chords by harmonic direction rather than weight. Silences should open the phrase, not interrupt its inner tempo. For the fugues, isolate the subject and its answers, then restore the remaining voices with matching articulation. An excessively heavy registration obscures the design and makes transitions harder to direct.
Prepare the final pedal solo from the beginning of practice, slowly and without chasing an effect. Its accents should extend the energy of the manuals while preserving clear speech. When the 5 sections are joined, measure every tempo change from the preceding pulse. The work can then retain its freedom without scattering into independent pieces.
