These Duets reduce the writing to two lines without simplifying the listening. Each voice carries its own design, answers the other and sometimes changes function within a phrase. The absence of harmonic filling exposes intervals, prepared dissonances and the precision of every release.
From one Duet to another, subjects, imitations, inversions and sequences create different characters. Cadences punctuate the journey without interrupting the conversation. The two-stave notation is manualiter writing: it invites the hands to act as equal partners rather than seeking a pedal effect that is not present.
Practise each voice separately while retaining its articulation, then alternate your listening focus when combining them. At a slow tempo, check vertical intervals without losing horizontal direction. A simple, transparent registration is enough; relief should come from phrasing and contrapuntal voice leading.
