Six partitas n°1 BWV 825

About this work

Partita No. 1, BWV 825, adopts the dance-suite pattern while giving each movement its own speech. The Prelude opens flexibly; Allemande, Courante, and Sarabande then alter the breathing; the Minuets tighten the gesture before the Gigue. B-flat major connects these characters without making them uniform.

First practise the basses and cadences to hear their shared framework. In every dance, choose a principal point of support and an articulation consistent with its step. The Courante should not run so quickly that its imitations disappear; the Sarabande needs space, but its ornaments must continue moving towards the following note.

On harpsichord, differentiate reprises through articulation or registration. On piano, prefer changes of touch to large dynamic oppositions. The Minuets benefit from simplicity, while the Gigue must reveal its entries rather than becoming a single rapid mass. Regularly linking the movements helps in choosing tempos that remain compatible across the whole work.
